Pre-school is a time of discovery. Children in the program are given opportunities to develop their love of learning through hands-on experiences that involve their minds, bodies and spirits. We are inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to education, which guides our work to encourage children to ask their own questions and test their own theories both individually and in groups. A child will acquire knowledge through active participation with age-appropriate materials and with individuals in the environment.
Each classroom is divided into centers which allow children to rotate through the room for different experiences. We utilize the Reggio idea of “The Hundred Languages of Children” to find new ways and mediums for children to explore ideas and express themselves.
Children need space and guidance to not only learn new academic skills but also to develop relationship building, communication and caring skills. Teachers in our program serve as facilitators in their interactions with children. All teachers interact with children in loving, nurturing, and positive ways which help each child to feel safe, loved, and valued.
We focus on teaching our children to care for each other, care for the community and care for the world. We seek to nurture children’s excitement and wonder of the world by learning needed skills through activities that are meaningful to each child. Learning to read is not just the ability to put letters together and read a word, it is also the desire to know what is written or to understand a bigger idea. Learning to add is more than just getting the right answer it is also the excitement of knowing that you have the right number of pieces to complete a design. Our curriculum allows for children to connect to their own meaning of the importance of a skill so that they are motivated to continue to develop it over time.
